They’re not rare. When I was growing up in New Jersey, I found one in almost every patch of white clover that I searched. It took about ten minutes of patience, persistence, and pattern recognition, not unlike mushroom hunting. You have to touch the leaves, study the ground, learn to see what you ordinarily overlook.
