Flash and Substance

I was asked recently about how one writes flash fiction, which is the form my first published stories took.¹ (Example.) The piece of flash fiction most frequently anthologized and taught, I believe, is Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl,” published in The New Yorker in 1978. Smokelong Quarterly is devoted to the form and regularly puts out good work.
